Family reunification

Family reunification

Family reunification can be achieved in several ways. This page explains two important routes: the MVV route and the Chavez-Vilchez route. For both routes, legal assistance from an experienced lawyer specializing in family reunification is strongly recommended.

  • MVV route, for spouses and children: The MVV route is most suitable for partners or spouses of Dutch residents or for minor children who wish to join a parent in the Netherlands.
  • Chavez-Vilchez route: for parents of Dutch children: The Chavez-Vilchez route offers foreign parents the opportunity to stay in the Netherlands with their minor Dutch child. This route is often used in situations where regular family reunification via the MVV is not possible.

Other routes for family reunification in the Netherlands

More information about other routes, such as the Belgium route or the EU route, can be found at mvv-gezinshereniging.nl. The options for family reunification (family reunification of asylum seekers) and extended family reunification (such as parents with adult children or other family members) are not covered on this page.

Why hire a lawyer for an MVV application?

MVV application

Applying for a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification does not require the use of an attorney. Nevertheless, it may be advisable to have a lawyer prepare and submit the application. In his blog, Jeroen Maas elaborates on the advantages of professional guidance by a lawyer.
