Sports law  in this day and age.

What can a sports law lawyer do for you? What about liability for injuries or the rights of a coach during a transfer? Due to the specific ‘locker room expertise’ present within Delissen Martens, sports law occupies a special place. Our sports law lawyers have themselves been athletes/coaches for many years. The knife actually cuts both ways in this case. We understand the law but also understand the emotion of sport, the athlete and the coach.

When Sports Law is relevant to you

We can advise you on all common aspects of sports law. These include:

  • Employment contracts
  • Assignment agreements
  • Sponsorship agreements
  • General legal advice for sports associations
  • Legal aspects of organising events
  • Portrait rights
  • Disciplinary law (including matters relating to cross-border conduct)

In the field of disciplinary law, we also litigate at the Institute for Sports Justice (ISR).

Marc Delissen also acts as a mediator in sports law matters. Mediation is fast, significantly reduces costs and parties always remain involved in the end result. An ideal method of dispute resolution for the sports world.

Questions and answers

When do I need a sports law lawyer?

A sports law lawyer is essential when you are involved in legal issues in the sports world. These can range from disputes over contracts, employment agreements and ZZP contracts, transfer disputes, portrait rights, sponsorship agreements to disciplinary proceedings. Whether you are an athlete or coach/trainer, or represent an association or sports organisation, a sports law lawyer offers specialised legal advice and representation in disciplinary or civil proceedings.

What is disciplinary law in sport?

Disciplinary law in sport concerns the (behavioural) rules and procedures applicable within a sports association or organisation. It often involves disciplinary measures in cases of, for example, doping, unsportsmanlike conduct or cross-border behaviour. Almost all sports federations in the Netherlands have outsourced disciplinary law (or parts of it) to the Institute for Sports Justice (ISR), which then takes care of these procedures for the relevant sports federation.

How can mediation serve a conflict in sport?

Mediation can be an effective way to resolve conflicts in sport, without court intervention. In mediation, neutral mediators guide the parties involved to reach a solution together. This can be useful, for example, in contractual disputes between players and clubs, conflicts between sports associations and its members or other disputes that can be resolved through dialogue and cooperation. Mediation is quicker, more confidential and often less costly than legal proceedings.
